Future moon bases will need a system for waste, but they will not use traditional water-flush sewers. Instead, they will rely on closed-loop recycling systems like the International Space Station.
Why Traditional Sewers Won’t Work
No water waste: Water is too heavy and costly to ship from Earth, so wasting gallons of it to flush a toilet is impossible.
Low gravity: The moon has one-sixth of Earth’s gravity, meaning standard gravity-fed pipes will not work the same way.
Pipes break easily: Extreme temperature swings and micrometeorites on the moon’s surface make exposed or deep underground pipe networks very hard to build.
How Moon Waste Systems Will Work
Total recycling: Toilets will use suction instead of water, capturing all waste to extract and purify every drop of water back into drinking water.
Farming fertilizer: Solid waste will be treated and processed into nutrient-rich fertilizer to help grow crops in lunar greenhouses.
